Pregnancy Ettiquette

When did it become acceptable for people to tell pregnant women (or women who have just had a baby) that they look big? I can handle the "are you sure you're not having twins?" question, but the "Well, you sure are looking big" comment just doesn't sit well with me... Or the husbands who tell their wives that they look like whales.... GARY.... so I decided to put a short list together of what I would consider Common Pregnancy Courtesy....

1). Comments about my weight are OFF LIMITS!

2). If you are a complete stranger, do not touch my belly (only my very best of friends or family is allowed that privilege!)

3). If you, your mother, your best friend's neighbor's cousin's sister-in-law had a labor & delivery horror story... please, please, please spare me the details! This is my first pregnancy, I am scared enough as it is, I don't need the extra stress of thinking about what else could happen!

4). Did I mention comparison to large land or sea animals is NOT acceptable?

5). If there is a long line for the women's bathroom and you see me at the end of the line with my legs crossed, it would be nice to be offered the chance to jump ahead in line!

6). I know that sleepless nights are in my near future...I really don't need a constant reminder! :)

I laughed so hard when I read this! I remember having (and letting everyone know) those exact same complaints!

And how I loved the"You better get all the sleep you can get now because once they get here, no more for you" I wanted to ask them "Do you think I can store the extra sleep in my pillow and then whip it out during all those sleepless nights you keep telling me about?"

Good luck these last few months! I think about you often!

Moments with Joshua will be worth it all!!
Remember those "You're so skinny!" comments. You are going to be a wonderful mother.
Love to all,

Girl you are too funny! I think we have had this conversation haven't we? Well...

You are beautifully slim , there is NO shame in taking the drugs as soon as they will give them to you and last but not least... my kids slept all night at 6 weeks old :-D You will be fine! God grants special blessings to best friends that insisted that you ( me in this case) don't look like a whale 5 months ater the fact !

Well, I know I'm just the sis here and although you were complaining a short time ago about not "looking pregnant" I assure you, you still do not look as far along as you are...and you def don't look like you're carrying twins! All I can say, is enjoy the attention you're getting now...us Mom's rarely get that special attention! :-)

Now I know that I am probably the only one that responded who doesn't have a baby, but I am constantly amazed at the things people will say to pregnant women. And I hear you on the belly thing. If a person wouldn't dream of touching your unpregnant belly then they shouldn't run up and rub your pregnant belly without permission. Geesh people, it is called personal space.

I had TONS of people come up to me the last month before Josiah was born to tell me I looked miserable. Now, it was August and I was miserable, but that was THE LAST thing I wanted to hear. The Sunday before he was born a visitor at church turned around during the last song before preaching and told me I looked miserable. I ran (or rather...waddled) downstairs and cried during the whole sermon!

Try to enjoy your pregnancy as it comes. We worry so much about losing weight, gaining weight, looking to small, looking to big, eating too much, not eating enough...God knows what he is doing with our bodies. He designed them this way, after all! Just hang in there. Once Joshua comes it will all be worth it.

Of course, then you have to hear that...You should have a hat on that baby. You should swaddle that baby. You should put more clothes on that baby. You have that baby too wrapped up. You should pat the baby on the back. You should not pat, you should rub. You should feed that baby more. You're feeding that baby too much...Rude people are going to say rude things! It's just the way it goes!
:-)
Love ya!

I would add one to it, the one that makes me madder than any of the others,

"Were you trying to get pregnant?"

To me this is incredibly offensive because you are inquiring into my personal sex life. If you say yes then people are like can you afford it, are you making a good decision, why do you want kids so fast. If you answer no, then they are like I'm so sorry. Why should I be sorry to have a kid, what's wrong with letting them come as the Lord sends them instead of micromanaging everyone.

Can you tell I seriously dislike this question?

I know exactly what you mean...well not personally but I have a friend at work she's pregnant with her first and just the comment that customers give her is rediculous!! People just don't think women still feel self-concious about themselves after they get pregnant! Ah it's kinda scarey because I am already self-concious about myself now what about when I get pregnant! lol

But I didn't know how to respond to your dad so could you just let him read this...thanks
