(Joshua @ 5 days old with his coveted binky)Ever since Joshua's last dr. appointment (April 19) we have been trying to ween him from his pacifier (aka binky). After reading Amanda Mizel's account, we decided we would try the cutting of the nipple method. Slowly we have been nipping a little off each week. We were immediately able to get him back to only using it at naptime and bedtime.
Last night when I put him to bed, I noticed that he had his puppy dog's tail in his mouth (not an uncommon thing) so I offered his binky to him and he didn't seem to care if he had it or not. So I brought it out of the room and put it on the kitchen counter. I thought, "we'll see how long this lasts" (thinking I would be going in to his room in the next 15 minutes to give him his binky). But he went to sleep and had no trouble.
This morning, Jim was holding him while I prepared his morning milk and he noticed the binky on the counter. He pointed and smiled and said "Binky". Jim and I told him that he didn't need that binky. I asked him if he wanted to throw it in the garbage. He smiled, shook his head "yes" and said "garbage". So, we handed him his binky, opened the garbage can and he threw it in there. Didn't even bat an eye.

We are now binky free! The doctor said no later than 2 years old and here we are at18 months! THANK YOU LORD!
Now off to Walmart to look for a new potty...
I don't guess potty training will go that smoothly (but a mom can always hope)

YAY for big boy Joshie! I remember dreading the weening of Brady's binky and it ended up being a breeze. I hope potty training will go as easily for you as well.
I'll be taking notes on potty training from you. We were hoping to start that about now, but my mother told me not to bother until after the baby has been here a little while, because it won't do me any good.
We're going to try and introduce the idea to him for right now, and we'll go from there. I am thinking he may still be a little to immature to fully grasp the concept, but we'll give it a good ol' fashioned try~

And yay for you "starting" potty training. Never too early to at least introduce it 'cause boys take fo'eva!! BUT, hopefully mister Joshua will be quicker than mister James. Good luck!
Thanks Amanda! Before reading your blog, I had never heard of that method and it worked great! I am thankful for all the moms on blog that have shared their experiences. We can all glean a little from each other can't we.
As for potty training, I hear boys are harder, so I am not going to stress about it, just let him get used to the idea. Any tips on the potty training would be helpful too (hint hint) :P
Go Joshie GO! Now you and Abbey can be animal lickers ;) Praying that potty training is a breeze! Maybe we need to tag team! And oh, I so never saw that picture before! He was so handsome, even at 5 days old!

I have potty trained 2 boys and 1 girl. I don't know if all girls are easier, but mine definitely was. I am all for taking it slow, and the more they see how guys do it the faster it will go. There is no question that when they got to do fun things like pee of the porch with grandpa (sorry Dad) it was waaaaay cooler than in the house. It was still progress every time he got to do what Daddy did over what Mommy said. We have frequently resorted to bribes, and begging to get them to go, but not until they were older, and really could grasp the concept, just didn't want to be bothered. Blake was so easy partly because she never left my side. If I went, she went in he bathroom too. She had seen it so much, she had the concept long before I would have thought she could. I just put the baby potty down, and she went, and it was over. Not much chance it will go that well, but here is where having two parents really counts.
